How To: Sculpt the Perfect Brow

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

Throughout history, beauty trends have come and gone; however, one trend that is consistently obsessed over is brows. No matter what look was in fashion, every century’s beauty trends seem to have an evolution of brow shapes. From the pencil-thin brows of the 1920s to the thick, fluffy brows of today, eyebrows are always a topic of discussion when looking back at the beauty world.

According to Beauty Crew's 2021 Eyebrow Trends, Samantha Tonkin, Benefit Australia’s National Brow Artist, states that "One of the biggest brow trends we will see continue in 2021 is the brushed up, natural-looking brow; a lot of this influence has come from our time in lockdown...we will be embracing bushy brows and people will be looking for ways to add extra volume and texture.”

Current 2021 Trends

Eyebrow MBA explains that current eyebrow trends tend to follow five main characteristics:

  1. Bushy and feathery texture

  2. Less makeup, showing some skin

  3. Brushed up and fluffy

  4. Natural appearance

  5. Soft and dainty arches

The following six steps give a detailed process on how to sculpt a brow shape that fits your facial structure. It provides instructions on how to measure and outline eyebrows in a way that achieves the current brow trends for your individual face.

Products

Before starting your brows, there are a few crucial products you will need.

1. A Clean Canvas

Begin by trimming and tweezing the brows, following the natural shape of your brow bone to create a clean canvas.

The first step is to start with a clean and blank canvas. This means trimming and plucking the brows, removing any unwanted hair that doesn’t align with your brow shape. Starting off with plucked brows will make the consecutive steps easier to follow. It outlines directions on how to follow the natural curvature of your brow structure.

It is also important to brush your brow hairs in an upward direction. JBIER offers the Winky Lux Universal Eyebrow Pencil which provides easy access to a spoolie and brow pencil for every hair color. This will give the desired feathery texture that ensures your brows remain looking natural even after applying the product.

2. Measuring the Front of the Brow

In order to achieve a brow shape that best fits your face, it is crucial to measure and outline the front, arch, and tail of your brow.

The front of your brow should align with the side of your nose in a straight line. In order to measure the front of the brow, begin by using an eyebrow pencil, such as the Winky Lux Universal Eyebrow Pencil, to create an imaginary line from the outside corner of your nose to the inside corner of your eye.” Once the pencil is aligned with the bottom corner of the nose and the inside corner of the eye, use the pencil to mark a vertical and faint line on the brow bone to indicate where the eyebrow should start.

3. Measuring the Arch of the Brow

The arch is the highest point of the eyebrow where the tail-end begins to dip down. To locate where your eyebrow should begin to arch, align the eyebrow pencil from the bottom corner of the nose through the center of the pupil. At that point, use the pencil to place a small mark on the brow bone.

4. Measuring the Tail-End of the Brow

The final step to outlining the brow is to mark the spot where it should end. The brow should end where the bottom corner of the nose and the outside corner of the eye meet on a straight line. Use the eyebrow pencil to measure out a straight line and mark the spot.

5. Connect the Dots

After outlining the front, arch, and tail of the brow, use the eyebrow pencil to connect the dots in feathery strokes. This step is essentially filling in the missing gaps of the brow hairs while connecting the dots to form the desired shape of the brow. In order to achieve a natural look, it is crucial to create faint, vertical lines at the front of the brow and slowly transition into horizontal lines as you get closer to the arch and tail.

Once this is complete, use the eyebrow spooly to brush and comb through the eyebrow. This should help ensure that the eyebrow pencil application is thoroughly blended and free of harsh lines.

6. Apply the Brow Gel

The final step of the process is to apply brow gel. Not only will this help to keep the brow hairs in place, but it will also give the illusion of a feathery and natural look. At JBIER, we suggest the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Brow Gel for long-lasting strength to keep your brows brushed up.

Why Your Brows Matter

Eyebrows are an essential part of beauty trends because they lay the foundation for framing the face. The right brow shape can completely change any makeup look or facial appearance: they help accentuate the eyes, shape [and balance] the face, and play a powerful role in communication. One of the most beneficial aspects of this six-step process is that it gives individuals the ability to create a brow look that is unique to their own facial structure and preferences. In other words, these steps are a simple way for beginners to find the perfect brow shape that best fits their face and desired look.
